Gravel Grovel Bike Ride Officially Adopts Leave No Trace

Famed ride through Indiana’s Brown County one of Responsibility and Conservation

The Gravel Grovel, a mountain/cyclo-cross bike ride showcases some of the best local businesses of south central Indiana, while enjoying and giving thanks in a responsible manner to the amazing beauty of the Hoosier National Forest. The Gravel Grovel is very proud to be sponsoring Leave No Trace as part of the annual ride.

The event will take place at the beautiful Story Inn located off of Indiana Highway 135 south of Nashville, Indiana. Training for friends and family of riders as well as scouts and others interested in Leave No Trace will begin at 11am, Friday November 27th, 2009.

Leave No Trace is a national and international program designed to assist outdoor enthusiasts with their decisions about how to reduce their impacts when they hike, camp, picnic, snowshoe, run, bike, hunt, paddle, ride horses, fish, ski or climb. The program strives to educate all those who enjoy the outdoors about the nature of their recreational impacts as well as techniques to prevent and minimize such impacts. Leave No Trace is best understood as an educational and ethical program, not as a set of rules and regulations.

Anthony Minstein, a Leave No Trace Master Educator, will be participating throughout the day leading various Leave No Trace activities including LNT nature hikes for friends and families of riders; Awareness training of the LNT principals; and for Cub and Boy Scouts, preparation for the 2010 advancement requirements to achieve second and first class scout and information necessary to prepare for achievement of the Leave No Trace Awards.

Besides spending a few minutes with riders, discussing LNT guidelines to follow during the ride, he is planning LNT nature hikes for families and scouts (which could count towards Award credits for LNT service projects) and presenting awareness sessions throughout the day.

Anthony has instructed numerous LNT instructor classes in Louisville as well as training guides and staff at Philmont prior to the summer high adventure season.
